We provide two different Vivos oral devices for sleep apnea at Breath of Life Dental (BOLD):
DNA (the Daytime-Nighttime Appliance)
The Vivos DNA oral device for sleep apnea works by applying gentle pressure to your hard palate in the roof of your mouth. Over time, this pressure will actually expand your palate and reshape your jaw, which increases the size of your airway and allows you to breathe easily all night long.
mRNA (the Mandibular Repositioning Nighttime Appliance)
Your
mandible is your lower jaw that moves when you chew or speak. The Vivos mRNA oral device for sleep apnea works by applying gentle pressure to your mandible to shift its position. Over time, this pressure will reshape your lower jaw to open up your airway so you can breathe freely when you sleep.
Dr. Maryam Seifi believes the Vivos System offers the best sleep apnea mouthpieces available because they are:
- All natural
- Nonsurgical
- Comfortable
- Quiet
- Temporary use
- FDA approved

Sleep Apnea Mouth Guards
There are many different types of sleep apnea appliances that work very well for patients with mild sleep apnea and moderate sleep apnea. The ones we use at Breath of Life Dental are as follows:
- Adjustable Herbst™
- Adjustable Dorsal™ Appliance
- EMA® Appliance
- Moses® Elite
- Respire Blue+
- SomnoDent® Classic
- TAP®

Each of these oral devices is a specially-designed tool that looks similar to a sports mouth guard. However, instead of protecting your teeth from a forceful impact, these devices adjust your lower jaw to improve your breathing while you sleep.
Each dental appliance for sleep apnea has its own pros and cons. In general, most patients like the mouthpieces we offer at Breath of Life Dental because they are:
- More comfortable than a CPAP machine
- Custom fitted

What's the Difference Between the Traditional Oral Appliances
and Vivos Oral Appliances?
Traditional Oral Appliances
A regular sleep apnea mouth guard, like the ones we offer at Breath of Life Dental (BOLD), is a great solution for obstructive sleep apnea. There are two main types:
- A mandibular advancement device
- A tongue retaining device
The first type, a mandibular advancement device, will help to properly align your jaw by gently pushing your mandible (or lower jaw) forward. The second type, a tongue retaining device, will gently depress your tongue to keep your upper airway clear while you sleep.
These devices are extremely helpful for patients suffering the side effects of untreated obstructive sleep apnea. They improve your ability to breathe at night which improves your sleep and overall health. However, they do not
cure obstructive sleep apnea, and you will have to use them indefinitely unless you choose to have surgery to expand your airway or reshape your jaw.
Vivos Oral Appliances
The Vivos System is revolutionary because it does not just alleviate your symptoms. Instead, it alters the structure of your palate and upper or lower jaw—without invasive surgery—to treat the real cause of your sleep apnea. With proper use, this treatment can permanently eliminate the causes of obstructive sleep apnea and relieve your symptoms.
In general, patients will wear the Vivos appliance for 12-24 months following Dr. Maryam Seifi's guidance. Unlike other oral appliances for sleep apnea, which will need to be worn indefinitely, you will not need to wear the Vivos appliance anymore once your treatment is completed.

What Exactly Is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is a term for sleep disorders that interfere with your ability to breathe when you are asleep. There are actually three main types of sleep apnea:
- Obstructive sleep apnea, which is caused by your throat muscles relaxing too much and closing off your airway
- Central sleep apnea, which is caused by miscommunication between your respiratory muscles and your brain
- Complex sleep apnea, which is caused by treating obstructive sleep apnea and then developing central sleep apnea

Our oral devices at Breath of Life Dental (BOLD) are designed to treat obstructive sleep apnea. We can help with varying degrees of this condition, including:
- Mild obstructive sleep apnea
- Moderate obstructive sleep apnea
- Severe sleep apnea
The first step for sleep apnea treatment is to schedule a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Maryam Seifi to review your dental history and receive a thorough examination. At your appointment, Dr. Seifi will be able to answer any questions you have and recommend the dental appliance for sleep apnea that's best for your needs.

What about a CPAP Machine?
A CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine has traditionally been the go-to treatment method for obstructive sleep apnea. It works by blowing air continuously into your airway while you sleep. This does help to keep your airway open and allow you to get deep, restorative sleep.
However, many of our patients dislike CPAP machines for the following reasons:
- They can be noisy
- You have to wear a mask to bed, which can be uncomfortable
- It does not cure obstructive sleep apnea
- You can develop complex sleep apnea over time by using a CPAP machine
Side effects include:
- Chest discomfort
- Stomach bloating
- Nasal congestion or runny nose
- Dry mouth
- Sinusitis
- Nose bleeds
- Facial irritation
Sleep apnea mouth guards, like the ones we provide at Breath of Life Dental, are quieter, generally more comfortable, and do not have these unpleasant side effects. This is why our patients prefer to use our dental devices for sleep apnea instead of a traditional CPAP machine.
