The Vivos System

Dr. Maryam Seifi's favorite dental device for sleep apnea is the Vivos System. This system is an incredible new technology for treating obstructive sleep apnea in adults and children. With the Vivos System, it is possible to correct the structure of your mouth and jaw to reduce and even completely eliminate your sleep apnea symptoms.

We provide two different Vivos oral devices for sleep apnea at Breath of Life Dental (BOLD):

DNA (the Daytime-Nighttime Appliance)

The Vivos DNA oral device for sleep apnea works by applying gentle pressure to your hard palate in the roof of your mouth. Over time, this pressure will actually expand your palate and reshape your jaw, which increases the size of your airway and allows you to breathe easily all night long.

mRNA (the Mandibular Repositioning Nighttime Appliance)

Your
mandible is your lower jaw that moves when you chew or speak. The Vivos mRNA oral device for sleep apnea works by applying gentle pressure to your mandible to shift its position. Over time, this pressure will reshape your lower jaw to open up your airway so you can breathe freely when you sleep.

Dr. Maryam Seifi believes the Vivos System offers the best sleep apnea mouthpieces available because they are:

  • All natural
  • Nonsurgical
  • Comfortable
  • Quiet
  • Temporary use
  • FDA approved

Sleep Apnea Mouth Guards

There are many different types of sleep apnea appliances that work very well for patients with mild sleep apnea and moderate sleep apnea. The ones we use at Breath of Life Dental are as follows:

  • EMA® Appliance
  • Moses® Elite
  • Respire Blue+
  • SomnoDent® Classic

  • More comfortable than a CPAP machine

What's the Difference Between the Traditional Oral Appliances

and Vivos Oral Appliances?

Traditional Oral Appliances

A regular sleep apnea mouth guard, like the ones we offer at Breath of Life Dental (BOLD), is a great solution for obstructive sleep apnea. There are two main types:

  • A mandibular advancement device
  • A tongue retaining device

The first type, a mandibular advancement device, will help to properly align your jaw by gently pushing your mandible (or lower jaw) forward. The second type, a tongue retaining device, will gently depress your tongue to keep your upper airway clear while you sleep.

These devices are extremely helpful for patients suffering the side effects of untreated obstructive sleep apnea. They improve your ability to breathe at night which improves your sleep and overall health. However, they do not
cure obstructive sleep apnea, and you will have to use them indefinitely unless you choose to have surgery to expand your airway or reshape your jaw.

Vivos Oral Appliances

The Vivos System is revolutionary because it does not just alleviate your symptoms. Instead, it alters the structure of your palate and upper or lower jaw—without invasive surgery—to treat the real cause of your sleep apnea. With proper use, this treatment can permanently eliminate the causes of obstructive sleep apnea and relieve your symptoms.

In general, patients will wear the Vivos appliance for 12-24 months following Dr. Maryam Seifi's guidance. Unlike other oral appliances for sleep apnea, which will need to be worn indefinitely, you will not need to wear the Vivos appliance anymore once your treatment is completed.

What Exactly Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a term for sleep disorders that interfere with your ability to breathe when you are asleep. There are actually three main types of sleep apnea:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea, which is caused by your throat muscles relaxing too much and closing off your airway
  • Central sleep apnea, which is caused by miscommunication between your respiratory muscles and your brain
  • Complex sleep apnea, which is caused by treating obstructive sleep apnea and then developing central sleep apnea

Our oral devices at Breath of Life Dental (BOLD) are designed to treat obstructive sleep apnea. We can help with varying degrees of this condition, including:

  • Mild obstructive sleep apnea
  • Moderate obstructive sleep apnea
  • Severe sleep apnea

The first step for sleep apnea treatment is to schedule a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Maryam Seifi to review your dental history and receive a thorough examination. At your appointment, Dr. Seifi will be able to answer any questions you have and recommend the dental appliance for sleep apnea that's best for your needs.

What about a CPAP Machine?

A CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine has traditionally been the go-to treatment method for obstructive sleep apnea. It works by blowing air continuously into your airway while you sleep. This does help to keep your airway open and allow you to get deep, restorative sleep.

However, many of our patients dislike CPAP machines for the following reasons:

  • They can be noisy
  • You have to wear a mask to bed, which can be uncomfortable
  • It does not cure obstructive sleep apnea
  • You can develop complex sleep apnea over time by using a CPAP machine

Side effects include:

  • Chest discomfort
  • Stomach bloating
  • Nasal congestion or runny nose
  • Dry mouth
  • Sinusitis
  • Nose bleeds
  • Facial irritation

Sleep apnea mouth guards, like the ones we provide at Breath of Life Dental, are quieter, generally more comfortable, and do not have these unpleasant side effects. This is why our patients prefer to use our dental devices for sleep apnea instead of a traditional CPAP machine.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How can I tell if I have sleep apnea?

One of the most common (and obvious) symptoms of sleep apnea is that you wake up feeling exhausted. This is because each time your breathing stops or gets cut off, your body will wake up—even if you don't remember it happening.

Other common symptoms of sleep apnea include:

    • Loud snoring
    • Waking up with a headache
    • Waking up choking or gasping for air
    • Difficulty concentrating or memory loss
    • Unexplained fatigue (extreme tiredness or weakness)
    • Dry mouth or sore throat in the morning
    • Mood changes like a sudden short temper
    • Depression or anxiety
    • Loss of interest in sex (low libido)
    • Insomnia (difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep)

If you have any of these symptoms, call Breath of Life Dental at (301) 818-2653 to schedule your consultation with Dr. Maryam Seifi.

You can also take our quick online assessment to have one of our staff contact you to talk about your symptoms.

  • Do you treat children?

Yes! Dr. Maryam Seifi at Breath of Life Dental has experience treating both children and adults for sleep apnea. If your child has been diagnosed, or if you are concerned about their symptoms, call our office at (301) 818-2653 to schedule a consultation for our customized oral appliances for sleep apnea.

  • How can I tell if my child might have sleep apnea?

Children with sleep apnea can have the same symptoms as adults, such as feeling exhausted during the day or having sudden mood changes. Symptoms of childhood sleep apnea can also include:

    • Bedwetting
    • Being underweight
    • Not reaching growth milestones
    • Trouble focusing or bad grades in school
    • Behavioral issues
    • Chronic or repeated illnesses

  • What if I have central or complex sleep apnea?

If you have central or complex sleep apnea, you should still schedule a consultation with Dr. Maryam Seifi. She will give you a thorough examination and advise you on which oral appliance will work the best for your specific circumstances.

Call Breath of Life Dental at (301) 818-2653 to schedule your consultation today!

  • Will I need a referral from my primary care physician to receive treatment?

Dentists cannot officially diagnose sleep apnea, but they are commonly the first to notice the symptoms. At your consultation, Dr. Maryam Seifi will be able to determine if you likely have sleep apnea and recommend your next course of action.

We can help you find an accredited sleep center where a licensed sleep specialist can give you a diagnosis. Then your primary care physician will need to give you a referral to our office for documentation purposes. Once those two steps are taken care of, we can begin your treatment and help you get a better night's sleep. .

  • I can deal with being tired. Why should I bother getting sleep apnea treatment?

While it's true that the most obvious side effect of sleep apnea is feeling exhausted, that is far from the only symptom, and it's definitely not the worst one.

Sleep is crucial for a healthy body. When your sleep apnea wakes you up at night, it could be dozens of times an hour (yes, even if you don't remember waking up!). This makes it impossible to get the deep, restorative sleep your body needs to recharge, heal, and take care of itself.

In addition to tiredness, untreated sleep apnea can lead to:

    • Worsened liver functionality
    • High blood pressure
    • Type 2 diabetes
    • An increased risk of heart attack, stroke, or heart disease

Click here to learn more about why sleep is so important for your overall health and wellness.

You deserve to live a long and healthy life. If you have any sleep apnea symptoms, you should call our office at (301) 818-2653 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Maryam Seifi.

  • I don't have any sleep apnea symptoms. Am I safe?

Not necessarily! Just because you have not yet developed sleep apnea does not mean you 100% won't develop it later in life. There are certain risk factors that increase your chances of developing obstructive sleep apnea, including:

    • Obesity
    • Family history
    • Age
    • Gender
    • Genetics
    • Smoking
    • Using relaxing drugs or alcohol

And if you use narcotic pain medications or have had congestive heart failure or a stroke, you're at an increased risk of developing central sleep apnea.

At Breath of Life Dental (BOLD), Dr. Maryam Seifi likes to focus on prevention as much as treatment. If you have any of the above risk factors, you should schedule a consultation with Dr. Seifi to discuss how you can prevent sleep apnea.

  • Will I be able to choose the oral appliance that I use?

If you have a preference for one oral appliance over another, you should let Dr. Seifi know during your appointment. In some cases, the exact oral appliance you prefer may not be the best one to use for your specific circumstances. Dr. Seifi will be able to discuss your best options and help you find the best sleep apnea device for your needs.

Call Breath of Life Dental at (301) 818-2653 to schedule your consultation today!

  • Are oral appliances or a CPAP machine my only sleep apnea treatment options?

Not at all! The basic problem with obstructive sleep apnea is that your airway is obstructed by something when you're asleep. There are a variety of different surgical options that can treat obstructive sleep apnea in adults, which you can discuss with your primary care provider if you'd prefer.

In general, these surgeries will involve removing excess tissue from your upper airways, such as your tonsils or part of your hard or soft palate. Some sleep apnea surgeries involve moving your mandible forward to create more space for your airway. And some surgeons can implant rods or other devices in your soft palate or tongue to change the shape of your airway and allow for easier breathing.

At Breath of Life Dental, Dr. Maryam Seifi prefers to use treatments that are natural and that don't require the use of heavy sedatives or painkillers to endure. It is her professional opinion that you can achieve fantastic results using the Vivos oral appliance—without the need for surgery.
