Understanding Airway Health

           The Essentials of Airway Health

Airway health is a crucial aspect of our physical well-being. It involves the efficiency and openness of air passages, which are vital for effective breathing. Maintaining optimal airway health is essential for both sleep and wakefulness, as it impacts energy levels, cognitive function, and overall quality of life.

Chronic airway conditions, such as sleep apnea, often characterized by loud snoring and interrupted breathing, can escalate into more serious health issues like heart disease and hypertension. The widespread nature of these problems underscores the need for proactive diagnosis and treatment.

           The Dental-Airway Connection

Dental health significantly influences airway function. The alignment of teeth and jaw structures can impact the airway, with traditional dental practices often focusing on managing symptoms using devices like CPAP machines. However, these do not address the underlying structural issues.

Vivos Biomimetic Oral Appliance: An Advanced Solution

The Vivos Biomimetic Oral Appliance presents a novel approach to airway health treatment. Its unique method involves the gradual modification of oral and facial structures, setting it apart from conventional treatments. Specifically engineered to address foundational causes of airway obstruction such as underdeveloped jaws or misaligned dental structures, the Vivos appliance tackles issues that are often overlooked in standard therapies.

Comparative Analysis: Vivos vs. Traditional Methods

           Traditional Airway Health Treatments

Traditional treatments, including CPAP machines, MADs, and surgical interventions, have primarily focused on symptom management.

CPAP Machines: These deliver pressurized air to keep the airway open during sleep but do not address the anatomical causes of obstruction. Their invasiveness often results in low user compliance.

Mandibular Advancement Devices (MADs): MADs advance the lower jaw to enlarge the space behind the tongue, reducing airway collapse risk. However, they may not suit severe cases and can cause discomfort and jaw pain.

Surgical Interventions: Surgeries like UPPP aim to widen the airway by repositioning throat tissues. These procedures carry risks and variable success rates.

The Vivos appliance addresses underlying skeletal and dental issues contributing to airway obstruction. It reshapes and expands the jaw over time, improving airway patency naturally. This approach is less invasive than CPAP and MADs and aims for permanent anatomical changes to alleviate OSA and snoring symptoms.

Additional Factors to Consider

It's important to recognize that each patient's situation is unique. Variables such as age, general health status, the severity of airway obstruction, and specific anatomical factors are all critical in determining the most appropriate treatment approach.

Financial Aspects and Insurance

One crucial aspect to consider is the long-term cost benefits of the Vivos treatment. This appliance targets the underlying causes of airway health issues, which may reduce the necessity for more invasive and expensive treatments later on. Thus, opting for the Vivos appliance now could lead to significant healthcare savings in the future.

Obesity and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) go hand in hand. Obesity increases one’s risk for OSA, and both obesity and OSA increase one’s risk of heart disease. Patients with obstructive sleep apnea need help to get the high-quality sleep that is vital for their overall health and wellbeing.

Obesity results from an imbalance between the amount of calories consumed and the amount of calories burned through physical activity and your natural metabolic processes. Many people have firsthand experience with this as they age. In childhood, you’re more active. You may eat a lot, especially during growth spurts, but you tend to burn plenty of calories through playing, joining sports, and other physical activities.

As you reach adulthood, you may attend college or start a desk job. Suddenly you’re a lot less physically active than you were as much of your day is spent sitting to study or work. If this change in activity isn’t accompanied by a change in eating habits, you can start to gain weight. This is a common occurrence for many adults all over the world.

Obesity is closely linked to insulin resistance, which can increase your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This is especially true if your diet is high in sugars and carbohydrates.

           How to Prevent Obesity

In order to prevent obesity, it’s important to adopt a healthy lifestyle. This includes balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, and other positive behaviors. Here are some key strategies to help prevent obesity:

             Maintain a balanced diet.

Focus on a diet rich in vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Limit the intake of processed foods, sugary beverages, and high-fat, high-calorie snacks. Keep in mind that even “healthy” options like sports drinks and protein shakes can have tons of calories, carbohydrates, and sugar; these are best avoided unless you maintain a high level of physical activity. A great first step would be to simply learn about the different elements of food:

what is a carbohydrate and what does it do? What is a protein and why do you need it? What is sugar and how does it affect your body? Take a look at the nutrition labels on some of your favorite foods, and if there is anything on the label that you don’t know what it means, look it up in a simple dictionary or encyclopedia to learn more about it.

Once you know more about food and nutrition, you’ll be better equipped to make improvements to your diet. If you are already overweight or obese, you may want to work with a registered dietitian to develop a balanced and sustainable meal plan that reduces calorie intake and promotes healthy eating habits.

Regular exercise is fantastic for your overall health. This can be as simple as taking a daily walk around the block or joining a class at your local gym or community center. Choose physical activity that helps you feel more relaxed or that you enjoy doing to increase your chances of continuing it each day as a habit.

Simply eating well and being active can go a long way toward improving your health and supporting weight loss. Unfortunately, there are many people who prey on the insecurities or fears of others to sell unnecessary drugs, fad diets, and other “lose weight fast” schemes. In general, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. And if you’re ever in doubt, you should get advice from your physician.

If you are overweight or obese, remember that it didn’t happen overnight—so getting rid of the excess weight will take time. Focus on your end goal of improved health and do your best to make good choices every day. It will take consistent work and lifestyle changes, but the reward of a longer, better quality of life is well worth it.

During sleep, the muscles and tissues in the throat and upper airway can relax excessively, leading to a partial or complete blockage of airflow. This can also happen if the tongue falls back against the airway during sleep.

The airway obstruction results in brief interruptions in breathing, often lasting for 10 seconds or more. These pauses in breathing can occur multiple times per hour throughout the night and reduce the level of oxygen in your blood while you sleep.

Causes and Risk Factors of Obstructive Sleep Apnea

There are several medical conditions, genetic factors, and lifestyle habits that can increase your risk of developing obstructive sleep apnea, including:

            Obesity:

Excess body weight, particularly around the neck, can increase the risk of airway obstruction during sleep.

            Family History:

A family history of sleep apnea may contribute to an individual's susceptibility to developing this condition.

            Aging:

The risk of obstructive sleep apnea tends to increase with age.

            Gender:

Men are generally at a higher risk than women, although the risk for women increases as they age, especially after menopause.

            Neck Circumference:

A thicker neck may indicate a narrower airway, which can increase the likelihood of obstruction.

            Anatomical Factors:

Certain facial and throat features, such as a receding chin, a naturally smaller airway, or enlarged tonsils, can contribute to airway blockage during sleep.

            Alcohol and Sedative Use:

The relaxing effects of alcohol and sedatives can affect the tongue and throat muscles, too. If these relax too much, they can collapse and block your airway.

            Smoking:

Smoking can increase airway inflammation and fluids in the lungs, which increases the risk of developing obstructive sleep apnea.

            Medical Conditions:

Conditions such as asthma are associated with an increased risk of sleep apnea because asthma attacks increase airway inflammation and swelling.

            Nasal Congestion:

Chronically congested nasal passages may block airflow through the nose and contribute to sleep apnea.

            Sleep Position:

Sleeping on the back may increase the likelihood of airway collapse compared to other sleeping positions.

How to Prevent Obstructive Sleep Apnea

If you don’t yet have obstructive sleep apnea, there are several steps you can take to reduce your risk of developing this condition:

            Maintain a healthy weight.

Losing excess weight can reduce the risk of airway obstruction by alleviating excess weight on your neck.

            Adopt a healthy diet.

Make sure that you eat healthy foods like vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Enjoy processed or high-calorie foods in moderation and pay attention to portion sizes.

            Engage in regular physical activity:

Engage in regular exercise, as physical activity can contribute to weight management and improve overall health and wellbeing.

Avoid alcohol and sedatives before bed:

Refrain from consuming alcohol or sedatives close to bedtime, as they can relax the muscles in the throat and contribute to airway obstruction.

            Sleep on your side:

Sleeping on your side instead of on your back may help prevent the tongue and soft palate from collapsing into the back of the throat.

Elevate the head of the bed:

Using a wedge pillow or adjusting the bed to elevate the head may help keep airways open.

            Treat nasal congestion:

Address chronic nasal congestion or obstruction, as it can contribute to breathing difficulties during sleep.

            Quit smoking:

Quitting smoking can reduce inflammation and fluid retention in the airway, decreasing the risk of obstruction.

            Manage allergies:

Allergies can contribute to nasal congestion; managing them may help improve breathing during sleep.

            Practice good sleep habits:

Establish a consistent sleep schedule with a comfortable sleep environment to help you get the high-quality sleep your body needs each night for good health and wellbeing.

            Manage stress:

Manage stress through relaxation techniques like deep breathing or exercise, as stress can contribute to muscle tension, poor sleep, and airway obstruction.

            Get regular health check-ups:

Make sure you see your physician for regular check-ups to monitor your overall health and identify any potential risk factors for early intervention.

Options for Obstructive Sleep Apnea Treatment

There are several available treatments for obstructive sleep apnea. Your physician or dentist will likely recommend one of these treatment options based on the severity of your obstructive sleep apnea symptoms. Additionally, lifestyle modifications, such as weight loss, may be recommended as part of your overall treatment plan. Some of the most common treatments for obstructive sleep apnea include:

           Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)

CPAP is a common treatment for obstructive sleep apnea that involves wearing a face mask to bed. This mask is connected to a machine that pushes a continuous flow of air through the nose or both the nose and mouth. The positive airway pressure helps keep the airway open which can prevent pauses in breathing and reduce snoring. This is a lifelong treatment method because it does not address the cause of obstructive sleep apnea but manages the symptoms.

           Bi-Level Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP)

BiPAP is similar to CPAP but provides two different levels of air pressure – a higher pressure during inhalation and a lower pressure during exhalation. This can be more comfortable for some individuals, especially those with difficulty exhaling against a higher pressure. It is also a lifelong treatment method.

Jaw Repositioning Oral Appliances

Jaw repositioning appliances are worn in the mouth to reposition the lower jaw and tongue, which helps to keep the airway open. They are designed to be worn during sleep and are a non-invasive alternative for individuals who may not tolerate CPAP. However, these simply reposition the jaw instead of treating the cause of obstructive sleep apnea, which means they are also a lifelong treatment method.

           Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP)

UPPP is a surgical procedure that involves removing excess tissue from the throat, such as the uvula and part of the soft palate. This procedure aims to widen the airway and reduce the likelihood of obstruction during sleep. UPPP may be recommended for specific anatomical issues contributing to sleep apnea.

           Maxillomandibular Advancement (MMA)

MMA is a surgical procedure that repositions the upper and lower jaw forward. By advancing the jaw, the surgery enlarges the space behind the tongue and soft palate, reducing the risk of airway collapse during sleep. MMA may be considered for individuals with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea.

is a noninvasive and straightforward treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), provided at Breath of Life Dental by Dr. Maryam Seifi. The process of oral appliance therapy involves wearing the oral appliance, which resembles a mouthguard or retainer, during sleep. The appliance is designed to keep the jaw or tongue in the optimal position, preventing airway obstruction throughout the night. is an innovative and noninvasive treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) that has transformed the lives of countless individuals who have this condition. Unlike traditional treatments that may require a lifelong commitment to devices or surgeries, the Vivos System offers a revolutionary approach to address the root causes of OSA. The primary goal of the Vivos System is to change the shape of the jaw without resorting to surgery or medications. By altering the anatomy of the jaw and palate, the system aims to eliminate the underlying causes of obstructive sleep apnea.

However, if the cause of your TMJ pain is never addressed, medication won’t get rid of the pain—it will only mask it. And to keep the pain at bay, you will have to keep taking the medication. This can be helpful if your TMJ pain is interfering with your life, but long-term use of pain relievers can

The amount of time it will take to fully handle your TMJ pain will depend on the cause of the condition and the type of treatment you receive. In some cases, TMJ pain can resolve on its own in a couple of weeks. In other cases, you may need to attend physical therapy sessions or wear an oral appliance for a few months to reduce the inflammation on the joint and relieve your pain for good. Your healthcare provider should be able to give you an estimate of how long your treatment will be.

you can do each day to strengthen the muscles around your TMJs. These exercises, coupled with the lifestyle changes mentioned above, can help prevent your TMJ from getting overworked or inflamed and thereby lower your risk of TMJ pain.

However, you should not do these exercises if you’re currently experiencing TMJ disorder. This is because exercising your TMJs when they are already inflamed can make the pain, stiffness, and other symptoms of this condition more severe. Wait until your treatment is completed and your pain is gone before you try these exercises. You can also speak to your healthcare provider about nutritional support for TMJ health and other TMJ pain management strategies.

If you’re on the fence about whether your symptoms warrant a visit to the physician or dentist, you could try resting your jaw by eating softer foods, massaging your TMJs, or using ice to relieve some of the pain. However, you should schedule a medical or dental appointment if you’re experiencing:

It can be difficult to tell when you should seek advice from your physician or dentist about TMJ pain. The opinion that matters most on this subject, however, is yours. If you’re worried about TMJ pain or other symptoms you’re experiencing and want to get a professional opinion, you should schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider.

Many people worry that they won’t be able to find affordable TMJ treatments without very good dental or medical insurance. While some insurance providers may cover this vital treatment, you would have to check your specific plan to see if the treatment that is recommended for your TMJ disorder is covered by your insurance.

Many healthcare providers offer discounts, payment plans, and other assistance to ensure their patients can get the care they need. Also, noninvasive treatments like oral appliance therapy and physical therapy are often much more affordable than most people realize.

Diagnosis requires a sleep study during which breathing and movements are monitored by a medical device. This study can be completed in a person’s home. When sleep apnea has been diagnosed, there are five common methods of correcting this problem.

            CPAP stands for

A CPAP machine pushes air through a mask or nosepiece into the airway to help the body draw in enough air. A machine sits by the bedside and is connected to the mask or nosepiece with tubes.

Older CPAP machines were noisy air pumps that kept some people awake. Newer machines are quiet and even warm the air before it is pumped to the mask.

CPAP machines don’t work for every patient. Many people find the mask or nosepiece intolerable, so they may stop using the machine, even if it has been helping them. A person who does benefit from the CPAP machine will need to keep using it for the rest of their life. At Breath of Life Dental, we offer

Some doctors and dentists can fit a patient with a custom mouthguard device to be worn in the mouth during sleep. The purpose of these devices is repositioning the lower jaw forward which helps open the airway. A few appliances draw the tongue forward to keep it from slipping backward and blocking the airway.

The advantage of these mouthguards is that they are less expensive than many other types of treatment. But they don’t work for everyone. Only those diagnosed with mild-to-moderate apnea benefit from their use. If they do help, a person can anticipate needing to wear this appliance for life.

           Jaw Surgery

There are several types of jaw surgery that may remedy sleep apnea. In most cases, less invasive methods of alleviating apnea will be tried first.

One type of surgery attempts to open the airway by trimming away tissue at the entrance to the throat. The uvula (the fleshy extension that hangs above the throat) is removed, along with surrounding tissue.

For very severe cases that don’t respond to other treatments, a surgeon may reshape the lower jaw bone by cutting and repositioning the bone.

The downsides of surgical options are obvious: serious health risks, pain, long recovery time, difficulty eating or drinking until healing is complete. And the results are not always permanent. If surgery does work, however, the problem can be terminated.

This is a relatively new option for apnea sufferers but it also requires surgery. This system requires a controller to be implanted under the skin in the chest. A wire leads to a nerve in the neck with another one placed close to the lungs to detect when breathing stops. During these pauses, a mild electric stimulation is sent to the nerve connected to the tongue. This stimulation stiffens the tongue so that it moves forward, opening the airway.

Initial studies using this device resulted in the majority of patients receiving a benefit. The downside here, too, is the chest surgery required. Additionally, if the device doesn’t provide relief, the patient may need to have it surgically removed. If the device

           The Vivos system

takes a completely different and groundbreaking approach. Rather than temporarily or surgically keeping the person’s airway open during sleep, Vivos oral appliances actually work to correct the underlying cause of sleep apnea: underdeveloped jaws and palates (the roof of your mouth). When the jaw and palate are underdeveloped—a common occurrence—the jaw bone is pushed back into the airway, partially obscuring it. Additionally, there is too little room in the mouth for your tongue to be properly positioned during sleep causing it to fall back and block the airway.

The Vivos appliance, which looks somewhat like a retainer, actually expands the width of the palate and corrects its shape. It also stimulates jaw bone growth. Vivos corrects the underlying problem without surgery or “forever” treatment. This even works for mature adults.

An independent study of those who had received Vivos treatment found the following:

Nearly all (97%) of these patients reported that they received the relief they sought with Vivos treatment.

More than half said that they trust their dentist to help them find an effective solution for the root cause of their apnea.

Nearly three out of ten patients said that they were looking for nonsurgical methods of overcoming their sleep apnea.

When Vivos treatment is complete, apnea is resolved in the most natural way possible and no further care is needed. That means you only need the appliances through the course of treatment, not the rest of your life. However, Vivos may or may not be covered by a person’s insurance. Check with your insurance provider for details.

The most important thing to know about sleep apnea is that if you suspect you suffer from this problem, do not wait for treatment, hoping it will go away. Every night you struggle to breathe, your body is stressed. It can’t relax, heal or detoxify itself.

What Is Sleep Apnea and Why Is It Hazardous to Your Health?

In the United States alone, 22 million people are suffering from the health-damaging effects of sleep apnea. But because sleep apnea is not understood very well, as many as 80% of moderate and severe cases of this disorder haven’t even been diagnosed. That means that millions of people struggle to breathe during sleep and are at increased risk for heart disease, diabetes, stroke and other deadly conditions. Some of these people are dying prematurely as a result.

By the end of this article, you’ll understand sleep apnea much better, know why severe health effects can be caused by this problem and know how it can be resolved. You’ll also know what action you can take if you or someone in your family has this problem.

         What Exactly Is Sleep Apnea?

It’s a sleep disorder in which a person repeatedly stops breathing for as short as several seconds or as long as a full minute. Each pause is called an “apnea event.” A person with moderate-to-severe sleep apnea will not wake up feeling refreshed and will often be tired, sleepy and less than ideally productive the next day.

These apnea events may happen a few times a night or hundreds of times in extreme cases. As a result, the oxygen levels in the blood drop and in fact, many sufferers become oxygen-deprived. This deprivation happening over and over each night can and does trigger serious health conditions.

What Are the Three Types of Sleep Apnea?

What Are the Symptoms of Sleep Apnea?

A person with obstructive sleep apnea will either snore or go through the gasping, choking pattern described above. They may wake up with a dry mouth because they have been breathing through their mouth all night.

Naturally enough, when a person suffers fragmented sleep and low blood oxygen all night, they wake up fatigued and unrefreshed. They are likely to be groggy at times during the day and may even fall asleep. They would also suffer a deterioration of motor and verbal skills. They may have a headache when they first wake up and be irritable. Sleep apnea also tends to make a person need to urinate frequently through the night.

What Are the Serious Effects of Sleep Apnea?

The existence of sleep apnea can go overlooked by the person suffering from it and their healthcare provider because the effects are so broad. This means that an individual could go on struggling with poor sleep and low blood oxygen for years. As the years go by, the consequent damage can develop into life-threatening health conditions which rob a person of an acceptable quality of life. Here are some of the longer-term negative effects of sleep apnea:

Lower Mortality Rate Among Apnea Sufferers

A study in Wisconsin of 1,500 people over a twenty-year period found that those with severe sleep apnea died at a rate nearly five times that of people without sleep apnea. Far more people died from cardiovascular causes such as heart attack or stroke than the people in the group without sleep apnea.

         Children and Sleep Apnea

Children as young as two years of age have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, but it is a challenging task to get this diagnosis right.

Among children, sleep apnea can look like snoring, restlessness during sleep, night sweats or long pauses in breathing. The child may cough or choke during sleep. Parents may just think their child is a restless sleeper.

During the day, symptoms of sleep apnea are quite different in children. A child may be hard to wake up in the morning, have trouble paying attention or learning in school. They may be disciplined repeatedly for behavior problems or be labeled “hyperactive.” They may not gain weight and grow at desirable rates. The sad fact is that children with these signs may simply be suffering from undiagnosed sleep apnea.

How Has Sleep Apnea Been Treated in the Past?

Until now, sleep apnea treatments involved either unsuccessfully helping a person cope with the problem or the use of surgery with its inherent risks. These past sleep apnea treatments include:

CPAP and similar machines: These machines flow air pressure into the airway all night long to help it stay open. They usually consist of a machine that straps over the face, covering either the nose or the nose and mouth. It is difficult for most patients to sleep comfortably with an appliance strapped to their faces. And there’s the sound of a pump running all night.

Oral appliances: These often look similar to sports mouthguards. They are designed to advance the lower jaw, helping the airway stay open during sleep. While these are tolerable for some people, they don’t correct the structural problems causing sleep apnea. When successful, they help a person breathe, but that person is essentially chained to the use of that appliance for life. There are dozens of these devices on the market, some that can be bought “off the shelf” and others custom-made by a dentist.

Surgery: Some adults who failed to respond to other solutions opt for surgery. A surgeon may cut away some of the soft palate, i.e., the tissues in the back of the mouth that shield the throat and control swallowing. This surgery could have the effect of making it difficult to swallow or cause a person to choke on crumbs that enter the airway.

In other cases, a person’s bone structure is underdeveloped which makes them prone to airway obstruction. A surgeon may cut through the jaw bone and move the structure forward, enlarging the lower jaw which gives the tongue more room. The tongue is less likely to fall to the back of the throat during sleep and block the airway. This works for some people but is, of course, quite invasive and exposes the patient to the risks of surgery.

For children, surgical removal of tonsils and adenoids sometimes improves sleep.

Medical Breakthrough on Sleep Apnea Treatment

Due to recent medical advances, a person with sleep apnea can now receive treatment that actually corrects the underlying cause. This treatment is centered around the groundbreakingVivos oral appliance which was created based on extensive research into the way the shape of a person’s mouth and jaws affects their airways. When these shapes are ideal, the airway can remain open all night. But when the bones of the lower face are underdeveloped, the airway can collapse at night when muscles in the area relax.

The Vivos oral appliance works by applying gentle pressure to stimulate bone growth and actually modify the body’s structure. As the bones change shape, the soft tissues, including the soft palate and the tongue, no longer obstruct the airway and a person can maintain an ideal level of oxygen and volume of sleep all night long.

How Does the Vivos Oral Appliance Work?

While this oral appliance resembles an orthodontic retainer, it is far more sophisticated in its effects and technology. When it’s worn 14 hours each day, this appliance can actually widen the jaws and reshape jaws into a more ideal curved shape. At regular intervals, the prescribing dentist monitors the progress of the jaw and airway restructuring to ensure patients are on the right path to treatment completion.

The result of correcting these structures? Deep, restful, restorative sleep unimpaired by gasping, snoring, waking and low blood oxygen. When sleep is sound, a person can avoid dangerous illnesses and wake up refreshed each day. Serious health issues can be reversed for a much higher quality of life.

5 Sleep Apnea Symptoms You Shouldn’t Ignore

Have you ever been told you snore or stop breathing in your sleep?

Do you wake up gasping for air in the night?

Do you suffer from sleep apnea or suspect you might?

If you have a suspicion that your nighttime breathing is disordered, you would be very smart to get an examination and analysis of your sleep. The reason is sleep apnea, a form of sleep-disordered breathing—not only undermines a person’s health and outlook on life, it can kill them.

But before we describe the five sleep apnea symptoms you should never ignore, below is a simple explanation of what sleep apnea is and how it affects the body.

         Sleep Apnea Explained

There are three different types of sleep apnea, but an overwhelming number of people suffer from obstructive sleep apnea. With obstructive sleep apnea, a sleeper is unable to breathe deeply and normally because the structures around the throat block the airway. This blockage minimally results in snoring and maximally in an all-night, gasping, choking struggle to get any air.

Watching a person with severe sleep apnea is brutal. They stop breathing for as long as a full minute while their body desperately tries to suck in a breath. Finally, with a choking gasp and sometimes a spasm that passes through the body, they finally take a big gulp of air followed by a few smaller ones. Their body relaxes and the process starts all over again.

Every time this person’s breathing stops, their blood oxygen concentration drops. Maybe a little. Maybe a lot. Their sleep is broken a hundred times a night. They awaken to one degree or another every time they have to struggle for breath. They never get a restful night’s sleep and wake up tired and groggy. They are sleepy throughout the day and often have trouble focusing on tasks.

Over time, this struggle and oxygen deprivation take a terrible toll on the body. The body’s endocrine and nervous systems are stressed all night when they should instead be cleansed and restored by healthful sleep. The body responds with systemic inflammation that can trigger a long list of ills.

While the effects of sleep apnea can cause an array of health issues, here are five symptoms you should be particularly alert to:

         Causes of Sleep Apnea

A person with obstructive sleep apnea, the most common type of apnea, suffers from a blockage to their airway during sleep. This occurs when the muscles in the back of the mouth relax and constrict the airway. As the muscles loosen during sleep, the person’s tongue falls to the back of the mouth, blocking the passage of air. Muscular relaxation also narrows the airway itself, meaning less air can get into the lungs even if the tongue is not blocking the entrance to the throat.

A person with a small chin or jaw or a large overbite has an increased risk for sleep apnea as they tend to have narrower airways. These structural problems occur when the bones of the face and mouth area have not fully and properly developed. A person’s diet when growing up and whether or not they were nursed for a lengthy time (developing larger muscles in the lower face) play a role in how these bones are shaped.

Other factors that contribute to sleep apnea include being overweight or having a large uvula (the fleshy tissue which resembles a punching bag in the back of your mouth), tonsils or adenoids.

There is a second type of sleep apnea called “central sleep apnea.” This occurs when the brain fails to transmit signals to the breathing muscles to take a breath. Rather than choking and gasping, the person simply doesn’t breathe for a short while. The sleeper may wake up feeling breathless or have trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep.

The third type of apnea is “complex sleep apnea syndrome,” which occurs when a person suffers from both obstructive and central sleep apnea.

         Children’s Sleep Apnea

While the basic structural problems are the same for both adult and children’s sleep apnea, the symptoms and effects are somewhat different.

Children with sleep apnea suffer the same fractured, poor-quality sleep as adults. But parents can easily miss this medical problem because some of the signs of children’s sleep apnea may be wrongly identified as willfulness or attention deficit problems. These unfortunate children may be repeatedly disciplined or worse—medicated with strong stimulants—simply because they have a structural problem blocking their ability to breathe and experience restful sleep.

A parent may not realize their child suffers from sleep apnea despite their showing these signs during sleep:

            Snoring

Going long periods without taking a breath

            Coughing or choking

            Excessive sweating at night

            Restlessness

They may simply think of their child as a restless sleeper. Actually, this child is struggling to get enough air in their lungs, all night long. The stress and inflammation created throughout the body plus the lack of restful sleep create the following difficulties for the child:

         Conventional Remedies for Sleep Apnea

For many years, most sleep apnea solutions have focused on helping a person cope with the physical blockages and did not attempt to resolve the actual structural problems. There were two main types of treatments:

Both the CPAP machine and mouthguards have a significant downside: The poor sleeper must rely on them for the rest of their lives.

The CPAP machine has other significant downsides: Many people find it extremely uncomfortable. It can also be noisy. Even though many users receive a benefit from using the machine, most abandon them because of their discomfort.

There was one other method of treatment that was used more rarely: surgery. There are different types of surgery for sleep apnea, depending on the patient’s specific situation. In most cases, a surgeon will remove tissue at the back of the throat in an attempt to let more air enter the airway. This may produce an improvement but in some cases, the improvement is short-lived. There are also repercussions, such as choking on crumbs of food or difficulty controlling one’s swallowing.

In severe situations, a doctor may perform jaw surgery to advance the lower jaw or both jaws. This may result in improvements but because of the risks inherent in any surgery, it’s usually considered a last resort.

But now, there is a non-surgical solution for sleep apnea that offers both recovery from this sleep disorder and permanent freedom from CPAP machines and mouthguards.

The Vivos Solution—a Breakthrough for Treating Sleep Apnea

A revolutionary new system of treatment is now available for sleep apnea from Breath of Life Dental. It is Oral Appliance Therapy centered around the Vivos-brand oral appliance. Both children and adults can recover from obstructive sleep apnea without having to wear a pump strapped to their face or undergo surgery.

The Vivos oral appliance, which resembles a high-tech retainer, gradually adjusts the shape and spacing of the bones around the mouth until they reach a more ideal shape to keep the airway open. The device should be worn 16 hours a day, which means that students or employees can skip wearing it during school or office hours.

Even fully-matured adults can experience growth and adjustment to their skeletal structure. For instance, the shape of the upper and lower jaws may become more rounded and less angular or the hard palate may drop to a more normal position making it easier to breathe through the nose. The jaws can even become wider. A patient’s profile often takes on a more balanced and desirable shape as the lower jaw changes shape and position.

When treatment is complete, the structure of the mouth, jaws and airway are greatly improved, meaning that an optimum airway can be maintained during both waking and sleeping hours without the appliance. The daytime sleepiness, fatigue, migraines and snoring that normally result from apnea can finally be a thing of the past. And the long-term damaging—if not deadly—effects of apnea can be prevented.

CPAP Machines: How to Beat Sleep Apnea Without Them

Every night, 22 million people in this country go to bed hoping for restful sleep, only to struggle with breathing difficulties due to sleep apnea. For many of them, this constant struggle wakes them up ten, twenty, even eighty times an hour. They gasp, they choke and they snore loudly. If they are married, their spouses may have moved into another bedroom long ago.

If this describes your nights, it might provide some consolation to know so many other people are feeling your pain. But what you’d probably really like is a solution to getting a good night’s sleep without a CPAP machine.

We’re going to explain how recent scientific discoveries into treating sleep apnea are now providing new hope for CPAP machine users. First, for those who might be new to this subject, we’re going to cover some of the basics of sleep apnea and the most common remedies.

A Brief Look at Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea describes a condition in which a person stops breathing repeatedly during sleep. While there are multiple types of apnea, the most common one, by far, is “obstructive sleep apnea” which occurs when a person’s airway becomes blocked. For most people, this is because the muscles and soft tissues that surround the airway relax too much; the tongue falls to the back of the mouth and the airway is blocked.

The sleeper struggles and strains to get air while the airway remains blocked. Finally, they partially wake up, suck in some air and lapse back into sleep. When this occurs dozens or even hundreds of times a night, it’s no wonder sleep apnea sufferers feel exhausted when they wake up in the morning. They also feel tired all day and have trouble focusing or being productive at work or in school.

Listen to Jeanette’s story on how the Vivos appliance turned his life around.

Many People Try the CPAP Machine . . . for a While

If you’re like many others with obstructive sleep apnea, you use—or at least try to use—a CPAP machine. The CPAP machine (CPAP stands for “continuous positive airway pressure”) is essentially a pump attached to a face mask that flows air pressure into the airway all night. Some CPAP face masks cover only the nose; others cover the nose and the mouth if the apnea sufferer also breathes through their mouth at night. All devices come with straps to secure the face mask.

CPAP machines provide relief for many people, but it comes with many inconveniences:

The person must depend on this machine for a good night’s sleep, perhaps for the rest of their life.

No matter where they travel, they must take this machine with them.

If the power cuts out, so does their restful sleep.

Camping out without power isn’t going to work for a CPAP user.

Sleeping on planes or in vehicles doesn’t work either.

The person’s partner or spouse is going to have to listen to the sound of the pump every night.

And that’s only part of the difficulty with using this machine. Some people have trouble with the appliance itself, such as:

They feel claustrophobic when the mask is strapped on.

They dislike the sensation of the forced air.

The feeling of the face mask makes it hard to fall asleep.

They dislike the way it looks.

And so, many people give up on the CPAP machine, even though it provides relief. As many as half the people who strap it on end up giving it up. Given the long list of inconveniences and other objections, it’s understandable that some people might abandon the CPAP machine and explore other options.

         Alternatives to CPAP

There are, of course, oral appliances, both off-the-shelf models and those created by a sleep specialist or dentist. Some look like simple sports mouthpieces and others are more complicated affairs with elastics and attachments. These appliances, unfortunately, also come with a lifetime need of wear, and often create pains in the jaw muscles over time.

There are also a number of surgeries designed to correct sleep apnea. Some people choose to have the uvula (the tissue which hangs at the back of your mouth above the tongue) and surrounding soft tissues at the back of the mouth removed to open up the entrance to the throat. There are other surgeries intended to change the way muscles connected to the tongue are situated. In one procedure, a piece of bone that attaches to muscles at the base of the tongue is moved forward, pulling the tongue muscles with it. It’s then secured to the front of the chin.

In another surgery, a small bone called the hyoid bone that’s located under the jaw may be relocated further down the neck. Because it is another anchor for tongue muscles, it changes the position and function of the tongue. This procedure is supposed to prevent the tongue from falling back and blocking the airway.

There is also surgery to cut and shift the entire lower jaw forward in an effort to keep the airway open.

The success rates for these surgeries vary dramatically, coming in as low as 17% in one study of hyoid bone relocation. Plus there are always risks associated with any surgery which could include having a bad reaction to anesthetic or suffering nerve damage or blood clots.

If there is a way to recover from sleep apnea without being chained to an air pump all night or suffering through surgery, that would be good news indeed for the 22 million people who struggle to breathe at night.

Introducing an Entirely New Way to Eliminate Sleep Apnea

New discoveries and research on the causes of sleep apnea have resulted in a whole new approach to achieving restful, productive sleep. Doctors have long known that a poorly developed lower face causes crowding of the soft tissues which then block the airway. An upper or lower jaw might be too narrow or wedge-shaped instead of rounded. This poorly-developed shape does not provide enough room for the soft tissues. The tongue falls or is forced into the back of the mouth and the airway is blocked.

When these bones are well-rounded and the hard palate is of the proper shape, there is enough room for the soft tissues and the airway remains open. But because today’s diets consist largely of soft, processed goods and because few mothers nurse their children for two years or more, the muscles and their supporting bones do not develop as fully as they did 100 years ago. You may notice that in some people, the whole lower part of the face is more petite than the upper part. It is quite possible that this person will suffer from sleep apnea at some point in their life.

Now, there’s solution that corrects this fundamental cause of sleep apnea. A company called Vivos Therapeutics has discovered a way to encourage bone growth that corrects the shape of bone in the upper and lower jaws and even in the hard palate.

What makes this discovery even more revolutionary is that it is effective for patients of all ages. Children, adults, even seniors can experience growth and see the bony structures of the mouth and jaws reshape themselves. Before and after images and impressions show better symmetry and a rounding of mouths that were previously wedge-shaped. Jaw measurements show an increase in width for patients with too-narrow jaws. Even the roof of the mouth can be reshaped into a more ideal height that allows the tongue to remain in the front of the mouth.

         The Right Solution

When the shape of these bones is fuller, more rounded and more open, there’s no need for uncomfortable face masks, surgery or oral appliances. There’s no panic if the power shuts down during a storm or if you have the wrong converter plug in another country. There’s just the chance to finally get restful sleep.

Vivos Therapeutics has developed the Vivos Biometric Oral Appliance to bring about this correction. It’s based on intensive research and testing that has proven that encouraging this bone growth and reshaping can resolve the causes of sleep apnea.

Each Vivos Biometric Oral Appliance is custom-created for each patient. Its design is carefully engineered after the structure of the patient has been fully documented and analyzed. Three-dimensional images are collected from the mouth and teeth, detailed scans provide information about the patient’s bone structure and the size of their airway. This information is sent to Vivos Therapeutics and the finished appliance is returned to the medical practitioner. The appliance is worn in the mouth, fitted to the upper jaw or both the upper and lower jaws, for 16 hours a day.

This device that somewhat resembles an orthodontic retainer is actually a sophisticated medical device that has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to correct underdeveloped facial and jaw bones that can be the cause of sleep apnea. As the patient’s bones grow into a more ideal shape, the device is adjusted regularly so it can continue to encourage more growth.

Why it’s Vital to Recover from Sleep Apnea

If you’ve had a chance to sit down with a medical professional and discuss your sleep disorder, then you probably already know why it’s so important to not let the condition continue. But 80% of those suffering from moderate or severe sleep apnea have not yet been diagnosed with this sleep disorder which could mean they have never seen a doctor or sleep specialist.

If you’re doing research on your own to understand why you can’t sleep well at night, then it’s vital that you understand the consequences of letting this condition continue.

Untreated sleep apnea can also result in weight gain and memory problems.

When a sleeping person stops breathing for an extended time, the level of oxygen in their blood drops. This is one of the measurements used to analyze the severity of this breathing and sleeping disorder. This oxygen deficiency causes both chronic stress and inflammation with contributes to these serious health conditions.

Oxygen really is the breath of life. Without an adequate supply all night, the body is prevented from healing itself and restoring, repairing and refreshing all its tissues. The body is in a state of stress all night instead of getting healing, productive sleep. It’s no wonder that those with sleep apnea may develop serious health problems in addition to feeling tired and groggy every day.

Finally, because of significant advances in the scientific understanding of sleep apnea, the condition can be fully and permanently corrected. This is an incredible blessing for a person who has tried one solution after another without relief.
